Bali

If you go to South East-Asia, make sure you stop by the island of Bali. Last April I had the chance to spend some holidays there with my wife and our two children. The majority of people there are Hindus and their religion is an essential part of their lives. Material poverty is visible but the richness of the culture and traditions brings about a palpable sense of community and engagement which has become too rare in our over consumerist bubble. Of course, the daily reality must be somewhat different to my romanticized experience...but Balenese people are proud of their island and want to keep it as far away from the noise and pollution of the Indonesian capital Jakarta. I have a space in my brain where I'll remember the warmth, colourfulness and inhibited friendliness of the few locals I met there.
